ABM intelligence: Beyond the Dark Funnel

Finding intent signals lighting up along a dark path

In marketing, the “Dark Funnel” isn’t something that can be ignored. It’s a mathematical reality that is currently eating your ROI.

In the traditional marketing model, we assumed the buyer’s journey started when they filled out a form on our website, but we were wrong.

Today we understand that roughly 60% to 70% of the B2B buyer’s journey is already complete before a prospect ever identifies themselves to a vendor. They’re out there right now – reading peer reviews, Reddit threads, and downloading whitepapers from third-party publishers. To your CRM, these people don’t exist. They’re “dark” demand.

If you’re waiting for someone to raise their hand, you’re already too late. You’re competing for the final 10% of the deal, usually on price. To win, you have to move upstream into the intelligence phase, de-anonymize that intent, and engage the buying committee while they’re still framing their problem. But don’t worry, there’s tools to help you get there faster.

From lead-based to account-based

The first step in mastering intelligence is unlearning the lead. In B2B, a single lead is a ghost. It’s any individual who may or may not have any influence over a budget.

The reality today is that the B2B buying committee has grown to approximately 10-11 stakeholders. So, if your marketing engine is optimized to find only one lead, you’re ignoring 90% of the true decision-making power.

De-anonymizing intent: Signal vs. noise

To see into the Dark Funnel, you need intent data. However, when weighing your intent data, it’s important to know what to look for and what to avoid.

Some intent data is gathered simply by scraping ad exchanges to see which IP addresses are visiting which websites. The problem? Noise.

If an intern at a Fortune 500 company spends all day on a tech blog, bidstream data will flag that company as “high intent”, but we know that’s not the case. And in the long term, it hurts your sales team by forcing them to spend time calling accounts that have zero budget.

You need to be able to identify what’s a signal and what’s just noise. This is where AI comes in.

Using AI to silence the noise

Modern AI models, like 6sense’s 6A Predictive Engine, now use Signal Noise Reduction to filter out false positives. Instead of looking at one or two clicks, AI looks for:

  • Surge frequency: Is the research volume significantly higher than the account’s historical baseline?
  • Topic clusters: Are they researching a broad category (e.g. “Software”) or a specific solution (e.g. “SOC-2 compliant cloud surge”)?
  • Persona breadth: Is it just one person, or are three different departments suddenly researching the same topic?

The benefits of utilizing AI tools to limit signal noise are no secret. B2B organizations using AI-powered intent signals see a significant increase in deal sizes because they engage accounts with verified, multi-persona intent. Take Zoominfo for example. Just last year, they reported an 83% increase in their deal sizes.

Take advantage of the tools you have at your disposal.

Building your ICP & TAL: The “Propensity to Buy” model

Your Target Account List (TAL)  shouldn’t be a list of companies you wish would buy from you; it should be a list of companies statistically likely to buy from you. This is where your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) moves from a static Word document to a living, adaptive AI model.

The 3 layers of a modern TAL
  • Firmographics: The basics (industry, revenue, headcount)
  • Technographics: What tools are they already using? (e.g. if you sell a Salesforce integration, your TAL should only include Salesforce users)
  • Propensity modeling: This is where AI scans your CRM. It looks at your “Closed-Won” history and identifies hidden commonality. Maybe your best customers all hired a new VP of Engineering in the last 6 months. AI flags that as a trigger.

Proprietary 1st-party subscriber data

Here’s the truth that some companies don’t want to discuss: Bidstream data is losing its power. With the death of third-party cookies and the rise of privacy-shielded IP addresses, guessing who is behind a click is becoming impossible.

Like ours, your intelligence should be built on a proprietary network of millions of B2B subscribers (87 million to be exact).

When someone engages with content across our network, we don’t just see an IP address, we see a verified professional.

  • Contact-level intent: We don’t just tell you “IBM is interested.” We tell you that “John Smith, Director of Cybersecurity at IBM,” has downloaded three whitepapers on Ransomware Prevention in the last 48 hours.
  • Content preference mapping: We track the format of the intent. Does this specific buyer prefer 2-page executive summaries or 20-page technical deep dives? This allows you to tailor your activation with perfect relevance.

Intelligence into action: A tactical checklist

To move beyond the Dark Funnel this quarter, follow this framework:

  • Audit your CRM: Run an AI-based “Win/Loss” analysis to find the technographic triggers common in your best deals.
  • Define your “Buying Group”: Identify the 10 or so titles that actually touch a deal.
  • Layer intent sources: Combine your 1st-party website data with verified 1st-party subscriber data to identify the actual humans inside the accounts.
  • Set a “noise threshold”: Instruct your team to only prioritize accounts where at least three unique personas are showing active intent signals.
Automated persona discovery

Last, but certainly not least, use AI to automatically fill in the blanks of a buying group. If your intent data shows the IT Manager is researching you, but the Finance Director (the Economic Buyer) is silent, use an AI tool to identify the Finance Director’s contact info and automatically add them to a “nurture” display campaign. This ensures you’re surrounding the entire committee before Sales ever picks up the phone.

The intelligence advantage: From guessing to knowing

The Dark Funnel is only a threat if you lack the tools to illuminate it. The shift from broad, lead-based volume to precision, account-based intelligence isn’t just a trend, it’s a survival requirement. When you move beyond the noise of anonymous bidstream data and tap into high-fidelity, contact-level intent, you stop reacting to the market and start shaping it.

By combining AI-driven propensity modeling with proprietary first-party subscriber data, you gain a definitive edge: the ability to identify the right accounts, map the right buying committees, and reach the right people before your competitors even know a deal is on the table. In a world where 90% of the journey happens in the dark, the winner is whoever brings the best light.
